Parable of the Oyster

Article by Mike Trainer

Ok, I admit it’s not one of the Biblical parables, but there is a pattern with oyster behaviour that is relevant for any person interested in maximising their potential as they live their life on earth.

So if somebody said you are like an oyster, what would come to your mind? Some people say (normally speaking about others) some individuals are like oysters because the closer you get to them the more likely you are to get cut or injured, but that is not where we are going, others say people use them and give nothing back which definitely can happen, but we are not going there and some say they are like an oyster because they have read somewhere that oysters are an aphrodisiac (not proven I must say) and they think they are the same, but we definitely are not going there either.  Where we are going is a few thoughts on the unique ability of an oyster, clam or alike that can produce a pearl.

The value of the flesh of an oyster is minuscule when compared with the value of a well-formed pearl and that is the point of the oyster parable.  A lot of people are like the ostreid type of oyster, that type do not ever produce a pearl, as far as they are concerned they are an oyster and a oyster produces a food for people to eat, end of story, but that is not the case with a pterioida oyster, these are the pearl producers and more to the point, that is what we can and (I think) should be.

“We have the option to choose what type of person we will be…”

We have the option to choose what type of person we will be, we can be a person who chooses to be like the vast majority of people, making our way through life content with its options or we can choose to produce some unique, of substantial worth, and dare I say it, with a minority.  With oysters it is estimated that one oyster in 12000 produces a pearl, interesting.

A pearl is produced after a minute foreign matter enters the oyster that irritates the flesh of the oyster to the point that the oyster produces a substance called nacre, that nacre covers the irritant with one coating after another coating until a pearl is formed, the nacre is lighter than concrete but actually a lot stronger.

So here’s the parable:

Basically, as we live our days on earth, we allow certain things into our lives, the oyster is similar in the sense that as it is literally a filter (up to 200 litres a day) as we also filter things that enter our life, but it is when something foreign enters (our mind) that cannot be rejected that an oyster can produce something quite exquisite.  The foreign matter for us is something that is different to what our world can offer, something that challenges the norm, something that intrigues or irritates, something we can’t just reject.

A good example would be something like, are we aware Jesus was walking around with his disciples only a few days after he was killed, we can reject that type of thought if want to, and many do, but we also can allow it into our thinking and as we build upon it, it becomes something of immense worth.

“…if Bible prophecy is true it means God exists…”

Bible prophecy fulfillment is like that, we can just reject its proof or we can absorb it and build upon it, always our choice, but why reject something of such enormous potential, as we have said before, if Bible prophecy is true it means God exists, it means we didn’t evolve, it means Jesus died on our behalf, it means we can receive the Holy Spirit and it means the potential to enter a realm where there is no more tears, no more sorrow, a place where you never die.

We should all at the very least think about these things, I still remember how I considered these thoughts to be nothing more than hopeful imagination, but I was wrong and I’m glad to admit it, those initial irritating thoughts have produced a pearl of great price in my life, we should all check if Bible prophecy is fact, and if proven to be so we should treasure what potential it offers our life.  Don’t let it slip away, let it become the pearl of great price in your life.
